Laminate floor, fluorescent lamps and background music
with Antti Majava

Untitled from series Hidden in Full View is a study into the built environment. Untitled is a space created with three typical contemporary materials: laminate flooring, fluorescent tubes and background music. It is a generic space that could be anywhere and anything: barbershop or clothing store, corporate office or airport cafeteria.

Untitled is an image of modern capitalism, an uncanny and disorienting place where everything is simulated and detached. Substance is willingly subordinated to appearance. The floor is not wood but a photographic representation glued onto board composed of melamine resin and wood fibers, the light is not sunlight but technological representation emanating from daylight fluorescent tubes. A commercial radio stream - meaningless chatter and lyrics revolving around sex and partying - adds a further level of detachment and invites us into a state of interpassivity: here the music has the same function as canned laughter - it is having a good time on our behalf, relieving us from our superego-injunction to “Enjoy!”.
